HODGKIN's disease: the prognosis

Hodgkin's disease or Hodgkin's lymphoma is a particular form of cancer that originates at the level of the lymphatic system. It is characterized by abnormal proliferation or deformation of B lymphocytes, the white blood cells that intervene in immune defense. The success of the treatment of Hodgkin's disease and non-Hodgkin lymphomas depends on several factors, including the stage at which the tumor is diagnosed.

What is the difference between Hodgkin's disease and non-Hodgkin's lymphoma?
There are nearly 50 types of lymphoma. Each of them belongs to one of the two main categories: Hodgkin's disease (Hodgkin's lymphoma) and non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL). Hodgkin's disease is distinguished by the presence in the tumor of the Reed-Sternberg cell. When this specific cell is absent, lymphoma is said to be non-Hodgkin's.

Treatment of Hodgkin's disease
Chemotherapy and radiotherapy are the two main treatments that have been put in place to combat Hodgkin's disease. They aim to destroy cancer cells, through medications (chemotherapy) or exposure to X-rays (radiation therapy).

The stage of the tumor, a determining factor in Hodgkin's disease
Early detection is essential in the management of all cancers. In the case of Hodgkin's disease, the prognosis is quite favorable. The cure rate is greater than 80% when the tumour is treated at an early stage (stages I and II). The same rate is between 70% and 80% in stage III and revolves around 50% in stage IV.
